The Easter Concert
Geschrieben am 27.03.2016
Easter Sunday evening in Cape Town. Silvertown Auditorium is packed with 1300 guests. All are excited and looking forward to the concert “Easter Favourites”. Conductor Brandon Phillips and the singers and orchestra players will ignite a musical firework in the following hour. “A captivating and moving concert” is the feedback of the German youth. Seats in the best category have been reserved for them on the gallery. “We were especially happy with the German products. When do you get the chance to listen to Händel abroad”, remarks Heiko Sturm with a twinkle of an eye.
Beethoven’s as well as Händel’s “Hallelujah”, “Christ the Lord is risen today”, arranged by John Rutter or the African-american spiritual “Where you there?” – the concert provides a mixture of spiritual music with grand but also quiet and sensitive sounds. Soloist Ernestine Stuurman’s performance is particularly moving. Her voice comes into it’s own in the “Agnus Dei” by John Rodrigues and will stay in the mind of the audience for some time. Also the conductor has an impressive musical account. Brandon Phillips studied in South Africa and the US and received several prices. In 2014 he gave a concert in Cologne, Germany with the Western German symphony orchestra.
After the musical delights, the youth had a special visitor. District Apostle Barnes had also been in the audience and greeted the guests from Germany in German and wished them a pleasant, though short, stay. The youth definitely intend to turn this wish into practice.
